Topic 6 Icons and symbols

Image
This weeks study is about a set of 8 Icons or symbols, what they're used for and where they are commonly found. What colour is used and the message its meant to represent. The icons I will be studying are found on the train I take every day to get to university and back home. These are rules and notices that can be seen throughout the train. This first image has two icons. The first (left) icon is an informative icon, it informs those that use hearing aids that there are services available for them on the train. These two icons are found near the entry along the top of the train walls. I found it difficult to understand what this icon meant, I initially thought it meant that there is no support for the deaf in the train, however, now knowing that it means that the train supports those with a hearing impairment has changed my understanding of this sign. The second icon is of a camera with the words 'Crime prevention cameras operating' this sign is easy to understand ev

Topic 5 Celebrity Study and Persona Creation

Image
This week's blog is all about studying a celebrity or well-known influencer on social media and write up about them and what makes them interesting to engage with. I then need to create a fictional persona based on my findings and develop graphical work that supports this persona. I have decided to study Mark Hamill. He is a 69-year-old male actor and producer who is most known for his acting performances in the Star Wars stories starting back in 1977. He has gone on to do more than just perform in Star Wars franchise, he has a long history of voice acting throughout his career. What I have found from his Instagram and Twitter accounts is that he is very famous with 5.1 million followers on Instagram and 3.6 million on Twitter. He has a positive and honest personality on his accounts, his slogan is "Believe in yourself! Work Hard, Never Give Up & Anything's Possible! OR kick back, Relax & Aim low: You'll Never be Disappointed". With his slogan alone yo

About me Topic 4

Image
Welcome to week 4s topic, Me. This week is a write up about me as a designer, how I am starting out with my new career path in graphic design and some of my history. I am a current student at Media Design School (MDS) studying in Graphic design. I am interested in comic books, video games, art, and miniature painting.   I have studied the Bachelor's degree in Creative Technology majoring in Game Art at MDS. The bachelor's course taught me to work as part of a development team, under tight deadlines. I am confident in both traditional and digital drawing, using pencil, paint and Photoshop. I know how to use 3D programs such as Autodesk Maya, 3DSMax and ZBrush where I have created and animated 3D models for video games. I completed the Bachelor's course in 2016, I found work afterwards at KFC, Boston wardrobes and later on at Gunnersens. My experience in working at these places taught me a lot about how various workplaces operate and how the various roles work togeth

Logo Evolutions Topic 3

Image
This weeks study topic is about logo evolution. I will be studying the evolution of the Canon, Adobe, Ford and BMW logos. Each one has a different and interesting story behind them and each had a similar goal, to represent that they want to be at the top in their fields. The Canon camera is a well known and famous brand, however few would know the evolution of their logo. In 1933 Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory was founded, the name would soon change to Canon. The first camera called the Kwanon was prototyped in 1934 along with the logo of the buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Soon afterwards the logo was changed into text, this form is a lot simpler and at the time it would have been similar to the Coca Cola logo in terms of the swooping tail of the "n". In 1935 the logo would be revised again and changed to a design that is similar to the one we know now. In 1953 the font of the logo is given a more stylised shape, the letters are narrower, bolder and are given more d

Infographic and Wayfinding Topic 2

Image
This weeks investigation is all about informative graphics and wayfinding. I will be studying 3 wayfinding designs in this post. The first investigation is a pedestrian crossing at an intersection with a diagonal crosswalk. In my observations I noticed how the pedestrians interacted with the section and what they were doing while crossing. The people crossing all interacted in various different ways with the crossing and the signals. There were those who would eagerly wait for the signal to turn green so they could cross as soon as possible, while others would wait leisurely to cross. Other people would be walking and looking at their phones and not paying much attention to their surroundings. The signage around the crossing was adequate, pedestrians knew where they could cross. However there was not enough signs for the street names to inform them where they are. The buttons for the crossing lights are easily accessible by all heights of people, there is even a beeping noise

Layouts and Grids Study Topic 1

Image
Week 1 in our theory class has been about studying grids and layout. We were given a task to arrange text in a 4x4 grid layout and now we are assigned to study layouts and grids found on printed material around us. I have chosen to study layout and grid designs in a comic book, a food brochure and a magazine. The first printed media I will be looking at is a comic book. Comic books have come a long way from comic strips in newspapers to graphic novels. The art style and grid layout have changed since then. From what I have found by studying the comic book below is the art style is part of the "Ageless Age", or the present time, of comic books. It is the age where "Comics have expanded into something without shape or borders" were "advanced technology ... has created an unstoppable juggernaut of adaptations" (Jamahl Johnson, The amazing stylistic history of comic books , 2017). Now comic books have the same structure and grids like the previous ages o

Days 1 and 2

Day 1: Moodboard The first day in the Graduate Diploma of Creative Technology (specialising in Graphic Design) was a day of learning about the course ahead with getting our accounts sorted out on the computers and having a quick run down of the basics of Graphic Design. We received our first assignment for the course. We have to make a moodboard about our interests in colour, Typography, the art we like and about ourselves. I used InDesign to produce the moodboard as it has guidelines and margins that will give structure to the layout of the pages by keeping equal spacing and perfect alignment for the images. I chose InDesign over Illustrator as InDesign is optimised for page layout across multiple pages. Below you can see my moodboard: The art board above has illustration work from Frank Frazetta, Jim Lee, Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, Johannes Helgeson and Burgerfuel (The company).  The watercolour art style by Frank Frazetta is so captivating, he is able to make wonderfu
