Logo Evolutions Topic 3

Image
This weeks study topic is about logo evolution. I will be studying the evolution of the Canon, Adobe, Ford and BMW logos. Each one has a different and interesting story behind them and each had a similar goal, to represent that they want to be at the top in their fields. The Canon camera is a well known and famous brand, however few would know the evolution of their logo. In 1933 Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory was founded, the name would soon change to Canon. The first camera called the Kwanon was prototyped in 1934 along with the logo of the buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Soon afterwards the logo was changed into text, this form is a lot simpler and at the time it would have been similar to the Coca Cola logo in terms of the swooping tail of the "n". In 1935 the logo would be revised again and changed to a design that is similar to the one we know now. In 1953 the font of the logo is given a more stylised shape, the letters are narrower, bolder and are given more d

Infographic and Wayfinding Topic 2

This weeks investigation is all about informative graphics and wayfinding. I will be studying 3 wayfinding designs in this post. The first investigation is a pedestrian crossing at an intersection with a diagonal crosswalk. In my observations I noticed how the pedestrians interacted with the section and what they were doing while crossing. The people crossing all interacted in various different ways with the crossing and the signals. There were those who would eagerly wait for the signal to turn green so they could cross as soon as possible, while others would wait leisurely to cross. Other people would be walking and looking at their phones and not paying much attention to their surroundings. The signage around the crossing was adequate, pedestrians knew where they could cross. However there was not enough signs for the street names to inform them where they are. The buttons for the crossing lights are easily accessible by all heights of people, there is even a beeping noise

Layouts and Grids Study Topic 1

Week 1 in our theory class has been about studying grids and layout. We were given a task to arrange text in a 4x4 grid layout and now we are assigned to study layouts and grids found on printed material around us. I have chosen to study layout and grid designs in a comic book, a food brochure and a magazine. The first printed media I will be looking at is a comic book. Comic books have come a long way from comic strips in newspapers to graphic novels. The art style and grid layout have changed since then. From what I have found by studying the comic book below is the art style is part of the "Ageless Age", or the present time, of comic books. It is the age where "Comics have expanded into something without shape or borders" were "advanced technology ... has created an unstoppable juggernaut of adaptations" (Jamahl Johnson, The amazing stylistic history of comic books , 2017). Now comic books have the same structure and grids like the previous ages o

Days 1 and 2

Day 1: Moodboard The first day in the Graduate Diploma of Creative Technology (specialising in Graphic Design) was a day of learning about the course ahead with getting our accounts sorted out on the computers and having a quick run down of the basics of Graphic Design. We received our first assignment for the course. We have to make a moodboard about our interests in colour, Typography, the art we like and about ourselves. I used InDesign to produce the moodboard as it has guidelines and margins that will give structure to the layout of the pages by keeping equal spacing and perfect alignment for the images. I chose InDesign over Illustrator as InDesign is optimised for page layout across multiple pages. Below you can see my moodboard: The art board above has illustration work from Frank Frazetta, Jim Lee, Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, Johannes Helgeson and Burgerfuel (The company).  The watercolour art style by Frank Frazetta is so captivating, he is able to make wonderfu
